The DNC Reform Blog - Doing Something Again... but what?
Updated: Dec 3, 2018
It's 2018 and I need to make sure I don't hate myself in 2020 so I'm getting active again. I worked hard for Bernie (canvased 3 states, over 1000 phone calls... I was all in)... I was crushed. I stepped back. When the midterms got close I did textbanking for several progressives (state AG races, national and state congressional campaigns) and data entry for Beto (I'm not even sad he lost I'm sad that many people think adult Eddie Munster represents them). And now I know I need to get ready to push the party left and get in the fight for 2020.
My problem? I have no flipping clue how, and it is really hard to figure it out. So I'm going to try this Reddit threads description and take a shot at it, while documenting the attempt through this blog.
I also obviously started this chapter of Our Revolution as well. I hosted a watch party right after the convention in 2016 (our first event), but was too depressed after the first meeting to go on. I've watched Bernie fight every day since then, I've watched medicare for all become the majority opinion, I've watched Amazon grant $15 an hour.
And now I want to do the one thing I VOWED I would do when I was so angry I walked away. Right before we got screwed at the convention, Obama called a bunch of Super Delegates to secure the win for Hillary. I SWORE to myself the next time that man lifted a phone to sway an election I would be one of the people on the other end of the phone to laugh and hang up. THE PEOPLE are what make a DEMOCRACY. I'll work with establishment to better society but I will NOT corroborate defrauding voters or the will of the people. And that is what the DNC did, and it is why we have Trump, and our ENTIRE block told them it would happen.
No more playing nice. The planet is on a strict timetable. We need all young people to come together to stop climate change. We need a Green New Deal that will solve the crisis, create jobs and save the world. We need to chase the solution the way Kennedy chased the moon landing. It is the innovative opportunity of our lifetime and the greatest threat we face today. We must be the leaders.
So... now what?
Well... I'm going to try this Reddit thing. I also have been listening to Damage Report while writing this and heard some really great people talking about The Committee for Ranked Choice Voting which sounds really amazing so I'm adding research into that to the to-do list as well.
Step 1
... hmm. That didn't really give me the clearest picture of where to start did it haha? Not a bad description of the process though, so that is helpful. Well, "check with my state party organization" is the most directive thing I see here so lets head over to ... whatever democrats.com?
After 10 min or so of browsing I navigated my way down to my county-level Democratic Party web page. I left them a message letting them know I was starting a branch of Our Revolution and wanted to get involved. I told them I wanted to move into a position where our group could influence policy and positions and need direction on how best to engage and support party progressives.
We'll see how that goes.
